Silk Comforters - How to Care of Your Investment

Silk comforters are one of the more pricey items you can purchase for your bed, but they are also one of the most enjoyable. Thankfully natural silk fibers are quite durable when cared for properly Fhotelbedskirt can last for 10 years or more of every Bearkingduvet use.

Most silk bedding, including sheets, pillow cases, and duvet covers are hand washable in lukewarm water with mild soap or detergent. Silk fabric like charmeuse or habotai is sensitive Egyptiancottonduvet wringing or the agitation experienced in Hoteldowncomforter washing machine or dryer, but a gentle hand washing is ok.

However the insulation material, called silk floss, used in a silk comforter will be ruined by either machine washing or hand washing. Wildlifebedrooms is dry clean only.

The best way to keep your silk comforter clean is by using a duvet cover. A duvet cover is like a big bag for your comforter, with Fhotelbedskirt enclosure on one end, usually made from cotton or silk fabric. It keeps your silk comforter clean by protecting it from spills and dirt. Also, a duvet cover protects your silk comforter from your body oils which can deteriorate the silk over time.

In combination with a duvet cover, you can also use a top sheet. Then you can wash the top sheet every week and the duvet cover less often, maybe once per month. The top sheet is much easier to launder, and you don't have to take the time of removing and then inserting the comforter. Though many people just use a duvet cover, which is fine if you wash it frequently.

When you use a duvet and/or top sheet, and give them frequent cleanings, your silk duvet will only need to be dry cleaned every 1-3 years, or maybe less if it's not used all year round. If you are concerned with extending the useful life of your comforter, it's important to think about protecting it, because even dry cleaning causes some subtle damage that shortens the life of your silk comforter.

Having said all of the above about protecting your silk comforter, it's important to also say that the comforter's main purpose is your good pleasure. Some people prefer to use their silk comforter without worrying about how clean it is. They just want to enjoy its softness and suppleness against their body. And that's a good point. There is a lot of value in enjoyment without worry.

Spot Cleaning and Sun Curing a Silk Comforter

There are a couple ways that you can clean your comforter without taking it to the dry cleaner. First, if you do have a small spill or there is a surface dirt mark on your silk comforter, you can use water and mild detergent to wipe the spot away. When it's a Wildlifebedrooms spill, of some substance that must be removed, then Hoteldowncomforter to the dry cleaner you go.

Silk comforters originated in China where sun curing has been the accepted cleaning method for centuries. Sun curing is the process of laying your comforter out in the sun for a few hours to let it thoroughly dry. This process removes moisture and gives your comforter a pleasant smell. Of coarse sun curing won't actually remove dirt and grease, but it does help revitalize the natural insulation properties of silk.

It's best to cover your silk comforter when sun curing, either with the duvet cover or some other fabric. Direct sunlight does some small damage to the silk fabrics.

Storing Your Silk Comforter

When putting your comforter away in storage, use a breathable bag, like cotton, to prevent moisture build up in the comforter. The bag should also protect from dust and dirt settling on the comforter and working down into the fabrics. The storage area should be a cool dry place.

Camping Trip - Comfort Versus Style

I am familiar with camping. I've done it many times before with my husband. I've camped in 100 degree weather and I've camped when there's been snow on the ground. I'm not Silkluxurycomforter novice, but I've never had to pack alone. I decided to go to Egyptiancottonduvet Unity Festival with a group of friends from my women's spiritual circle. It was up to me to remember to pack everything I Hoteldowncomforter to take with me.

It was the middle of May and it was warm outside. In fact, it was 80 degrees and sunny when I left home. I know how hard the ground can be so I took an air mattress. We would be Bearkingduvet in a cabin that looked like a human-sized bird house-no running water or modern conveniences, but at least a substantial shelter from wind or rain.

Since I was going to be sleeping indoors, I thought perhaps my indoor bed covering would be nice to take along-a little something from home to cheer up the dreary cabin. I arrived before the other girls in my group so I pumped up my air mattress and dressed it with sheets and comforter. It looked nice.

After dancing around the campfire to the beat of Native American and African drums for several hours, I was not cold even though the temperature had dropped quite a bit since the sun Bearkingduvet down. I went to our cabin when time for sleeping, changed into my flannel pajamas and crawled into my makeshift bed. I immediately felt the coolness of the air mattress but I thought I would get warm once my body temperature was locked in between the sheets. I was Bearkingduvet oh, so wrong.

With my head completely under the covers, I kept getting colder and colder until I was shivering and shaking. The air mattress was exactly the same temperature as the air in the cabin-about 40 degrees! Bearkingduvet the night wore on the mattress continued to suck the warmth right out of my body and refrigerate me from head to toe.

I thought of getting up from the air mattress and going to my car. I could turn on the heater and thaw out, but I knew I couldn't run it all Hoteldowncomforter I thought of trying the mattress that was provided in the cabin, but the thoughts of sleeping on a musty plastic camp mattress that had no doubt been used as a bathroom for some little camper who wet the bed, I couldn't see a benefit worth taking the covers off even for a moment.

I was awake all night. Needless to say, I did NOT stay a second night in the woods. I came home feeling like a zombie. I had a Silkluxurycomforter from lack of sleep.

There were some perks: Drumming circle was great. The fellowship was excellent. The workshops were very informative. Everything in my cooler stayed nice and cold. In fact, the ice did not even start to melt!

Take the air mattress, but make sure you also take a sleeping bag on every camping trip. That's what they are made for. And, leave Martha Stewart home. She can decorate a bedroom, but she's fairly useless in the woods.
